To help you get a true taste of Italian culture, the Resident Director arranges optional visits to museums, art galleries and monuments and can offer advice and information on planning private weekend trips to such places as Pisa, Lucca, Siena, and the Cinque Terre.

Life Changing Florence: A Flawless Experience

The work load was less in terms of homework but it differed because each class required a large essay and tests that counted for a lot more of the grades. This lead to making sure I did well on these few assignments or it could have drastically affected my grade. view full review

This program exceeded my expectations. I took two classes and am used to a very heavy workload but the workload for the classes I took abroad was a decent amount but very manageable. The teaching methods were very similar to those at my home university as well as the educational system. I was not taken off guard. The workload was reasonable for being abroad. The teachers and program staff understood that we were abroad to travel and explore rather than spending all of our free time studying. I didn't think the grading system was too different; most classes had quizzes, 2 or 3 exams, and a final. view full review

Tom Kealy was a great professor. I loved how he taught in the city more than in a classroom. This helped engage students and helped us understand more about what we were learning. However, the Italian language professor was alright. She did not really understand english, but that was not my main concern as I got used to the Italian language. I enjoyed my classes abroad greatly. Each of my teachers came from a different background and presented very interesting perspectives. The class choices were very very interesting and I enjoyed each and every subject. The workload was just right. I definitely earned the credits but I still had plenty of time to explore and enjoy the culture. Peter Porcal is the best teacher ever. He is such an awesome and interesting man. view full review

The workload was not too difficult. The Italian teaching style is different and they expect for you to read outside of the class. That being said the teachers were pretty lenient when it came to grading and I was still able to learn quite a lot. There was an attendance policy but teachers were and would be more than willing to accommodate students. view full review

DO IT. And by that I mean do EVERYTHING. This program is awesome, if you are worried about home-sickness, you will be homesick but everyone is at one point, you are in a new and maybe strange place and you cant understand anyone but the people you are with. Be patient and explore, not just Italy, but around Europe. It's not everyday that you find yourself a two hour plane ride away from Germany...so take advantage of it! Also...try the food, everything is amazinnggg! view full review

I learned how to be more independent. There are still people (other students or staff memberes) to aid you but in many cases you need to rely on yourself to figure out how to handle situations that may come up. I learned a lot, but to have 3 12 page research papers due in 1 day is a lot. Richmond only stayed opened until 6 o'clock pm and was closed on weekends. The internet in my apartment would sometimes not work, and that made it difficult to get some of my research done. view full review

The professors understood that we were abroad and that a good deal of our learning experience came from our being able to travel and generally assimilate into the culture of the host country. That being said, the courses were challenging enough that we still learned a great deal. This program really is the best. I did some fairly extensive research into the various programs in Italy, but AIFS had the best deals/offered the most! Go abroad if you're remotely considering it! And if you can, go for a semester rather than a summer. Summer has too many tourists that it dilutes the richness of the culture. view full review

Take advantage of everything they offer! It's worthwhile, even if your friends you've met aren't participating, it's a good way to meet other interesting people you may not be super close with on your trip. view full review

Anyone who is at all interested in going abroad truly should! And honestly, I feel that going for a summer doesn't suffice. A full-semester was perfect. Furthermore, you get an even richer cultural experience when you are there for a semester instead of a summer since it is a much less tourist time. if your thinking about studying abroad and the only doubt that you have is you want to stay with your friends at hartford you should go abroad. You wont miss anything for one semester and the semester abroad will be better than the previous semesters combined. Trust me,.Best experience of your life. view full review
